Randy Quaid Released From Custody In Canada, Faces Deportation
Following his detention by the Canada Border Services Agency on Wednesday, he was brought before Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board, which ordered his release.
Quaid, a Texas native, had sought asylum in Canada in 2010, alleging a long-standing plot by former business associates, who he has called “star whackers”, to steal his wealth. She also tweeted that she wanted to renounce the citizenship she was given in 2010.
Deportation can take years after a citizen application is denied, and Quaid was allowed to remain in the country, but he was ordered to check in with border authorities on a regular basis.
Santa Barbara officials have previously said they would arrest Quaid if he returned to the US.
The actor is due to be sent back to the USA next week (beg12Oct15) to face charges for allegedly squatting at a house in Santa Barbara, California.
Sporting a massive beard and shoulder-length grey hair, Quaid was silent during the hearing as his wife, Evi, sat in the audience.
“I probably will get arrested for all that”.
On Wednesday, Quaid said in an interview with The Associated Press from a detention center in Laval, Quebec, that he would like to resolve his legal issues in California and “move on with my life”.
Quaid, who has been living in Montreal since January 2013, was released after that arrest. He later apologized and was released, with the requirement to check in every two weeks.
After arriving in Canada in 2010, the Quaids lived in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa before moving to Montreal.
Quaid’s bid for permanent residency was denied in December 2012 and he was arrested earlier this year after he stopped checking in with immigration officials.
He was also nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor for his role in 1973’s “The Last Detail”, which starred Jack Nicholson.
