Twitter plans layoffs next week
Jack Dorsey was named permanent CEO of Twitter on Monday, and a big reason he got the job was that as a co-founder, Dorsey isn’t afraid to make the tough, necessary decisions.
Twitter is said to be planning to announce layoffs across most departments of the company next week, according a report late Friday from Re/code.
It is unclear how many of Twitter’s staff will be laid off, but it is likely it will affect most departments, Re/code said, citing company insiders. According to Re/code, this includes cutting staff across the company – starting next week.
Dorsey, who has served as interim CEO since June, has been vocal about the need to shake things up at the company, as user growth and engagement has stalled.
The tech blog said that it’s likely that many of those impacted by the layoffs will be engineers.
“We’re not commenting on rumor and speculation”, a Twitter spokeswoman told Reuters. In December 2014, Twitter had 3,638 full-time employees. The company was looking to lease as much as 100,000 square feet of additional office space near its San Francisco headquarters, but canceled these plans earlier this month.
On Tuesday, Twitter rolled out a radically new feature called Moments to help casual or hesitant users discover content on the social network.
