Upon learning of Carter’s killing, San Francisco police investigators got in touch with Marin County authorities, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak, a San Francisco police spokesman.
The three will be charged with murder in the shooting death late last week of Audrey Carey, San Francisco police said Thursday night.
A hiker found Carter’s body about 6 p.m. Monday. Carter’s dog, a Doberman Pinscher, had also been shot and was still leashed to him, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities have said it did not appear the suspects knew Carter. None of them has a known permanent address. His vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta station wagon, was stolen.
