It purchased music analytics start-up Semetric in January, mere months before the launch of Apple Music. The UK-based personal assistant software, Vocal IQ able to perform longer conversation than Siri.
Apple’s voice recognition has improved since its first debut in 2011, but it still feels unintelligent at times and, after years of being out of beta, still slightly undeveloped.
Apple confirmed the acquisition.
VocalIQ’s team is expected to remain at its Cambridge, United Kingdom headquarters with no plans to move to Apple’s campus in Cupertino, CA. According to the report, deep learning is an approach to artificial intelligence that lets computers learn to identify and classify sensory input. (Think Samantha in the movie “Her”, or “Jarvis” in Iron Man, as the Financial Times suggested). The company also bought Vocal IQ, which specializes in natural language technology that can be used to make Siri more human-like. “It is unrealistic to expect seven billion people to start talking to machines in a way mandated by a programmer”.
Apple has acquired Perceptio, a a startup developing artificial intelligence systems that can run on your smartphone without needing to rely on the cloud, reports Bloomberg.
Both Pinto and Stone have backgrounds in the artificial intelligence field, having been researchers dedicated to building image-recognition systems that use deep learning.
