Serena Williams makes history with Wimbledon 2015
In New York at the U.S. Open, Serena Williams will attempt to become only the fourth woman – and the sixth player – to win a calendar year Grand Slam, joining Don Budge (1938), Maureen Connolly (1953), Rod Laver (1962, 1969), Margaret Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988) to sweep all four majors in a season.
“I’m just happy it was such a great match, ” William said. But when Watson broke her and took a five-games-to-four lead, hope again started fading as the young Brit prepared to serve for the match. But, serving for the match with 5-1 and then 5-3 leads, Williams was gripped by a bad case of nerves and Muguruza broke twice to prolong the contest.

The records tumbled in the 6-4, 6-4 win over the gallant 21-year-old from Barcelona, moving within one title of Graf (22) at the top of the leader board for the most grand slam victories in the Open era.
Federer plays world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final tomorrow, and in what could perhaps be a good omen, his compatriot Martina Hingis roller back the years in the women’s doubles with a first Wimbledon title in 17 years. She will be holding this trophy very, very soon.

And any suggestion that Venus, with seven grand slams including five at Wimbledon, might be at all jealous were quashed by Davenport.
– At 33, she is the oldest woman to win a major title in the Open era, almost a month older than Navratilova was at Wimbledon in 1990.
