In a live televised address on Thursday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was “in the midst of a wave of terror” but vowed to defeat it.
The attacks were initially confined to east Jerusalem, site of the sacred compound, and the West Bank – both territories captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war and claimed by the Palestinians for their future state.
And in Afula, a Palestinian woman was shot by a uniformed Israeli whom she reportedly meant to stab. According to police, he had opened fire at security forces at the Shuafat refugee camp. Six Palestinians were killed and a dozen were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The attack took place near a tramway station cl-ose to the national police headquarters, the police said.

In the Kiryat Arba settlement in the West Bank city of Hebron, an Israeli man was in serious condition after being stabbed in the stomach, Samri said.
Less than an hour earlier, a Palestinian used a vegetable peeler to stab and injure the 14-year-old Israeli in Jerusalem before he was arrested, police said.
“Jerusalem is exploding, the West Bank is on fire…the rioting has spread to Jaffa”, wrote Asher Schechter in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on Wednesday.
Facebook and YouTube were asked to remove videos which have allegedly been encouraging Palestinian attacks.
A Palestinian stabbing attack had occurred in the same city a day before. A few Israeli officials have called for civilians who own arms to carry them at all times.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said three other people were also slightly hurt.
Jews and non-Muslims can visit Al-Aqsa, but are not allowed to pray there.
So far these amount to mostly “go-it-alone” attacks that appeared to fall short of an organised uprising.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian official stressed Thursday that regional peace, security and stability can only be achieved through the end of the Israeli occupation. Initial reports said that the stabber, armed with a screwdriver, injured the woman soldier in the head and then failed in an attempt to grab her gun. More than 130 Palestinians have been wounded in demonstrations and clashes across the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

A Jewish suspect stabbed and wounded four Arabs in southern Israel on Friday, police said, in the first such attack after a spate of stabbings in recent days targeting Israelis.
“Police have made security assessments for Friday prayers and have added many metal detectors and extra checkpoints throughout the Old City, and will continue to closely monitor Arab neighbourhoods”, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told local media. “In the United Nations we said it: Israel needs to stick to its commitments and we will stick to ours”. The site is so sensitive that even rumors are enough to trigger violence there.
Abbas has spoken out against violence and in favour of “peaceful, popular resistance”, but many youths are frustrated with his leadership as well as Israel’s government.
