Records fall as high heat envelopes Southern California
Another heat wave is headed for San Diego, with temperatures peaking on Friday at 10 to 20 degrees above normal.
Forecasters urged residents to protect themselves and their loved ones against dehydration, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. The average high for this time of year in San Diego is 74.
City News Service says another 3,000 Southern California Edison customers also briefly lost service. The previous high of 103 was set in September of 1978.
Sea surface temperatures are in the 70-72 degree range. Downtown Los Angeles is expected to revert to the 80s by Tuesday, then continue cooling down.
Also issued for Orange County was a beach hazard statement, which is less serious than a high surf advisory.
Heat advisory is expected to go into effect from 10 a.m.to 8 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service experts. Children, the elderly and pets without adequate shelter are at high risk.
Along the coast, meanwhile, “a moderately long-period swell will bring unsafe rip currents and increased wave activity at area beaches this weekend”, an NWS statement said.
The system is expected to move out by Sunday, when temperatures could fall back into the 70s and 80s.
