Whole Foods Market recalls Papillon Organic Roquefort Cheese
Fortunately, no illnesses or infections in association with the product have yet been reported so the recall, for now (and hopefully for all) is simply precautionary.
Listeria can cause people to get so sick they have to be hospitalized, according to the FDA. The disease can cause serious and crippling complications, such as meningitis, which is an acute inflammation of the membranes that cover the spine and brain.
Consumers who purchased the cheese from a Whole Foods Market store may bring in their receipt for a full refund.
The food retailer made a decision to go through with the recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found Listeria during routine sampling on a wheel of the cheese. In an email, Marler also pointed out that this incident brings into focus the importance of testing end products before they are shipped to the customers.
Officials with the company say the cheese might be tainted with listeria. Whole Foods Market had chose to recall the product after the said finding. In August, a brand of chocolate chips was recalled, as was Cascadian Farm Cut Green beans, and a brand of macadamia nuts.
Those at risk for listeria infections, which can be deadly, include the very young and old, along with pregnant women and anyone who has a compromised immune system.
So far, no listeria cases have been tied directly to the recalled blue cheese. If you have experienced these symptoms and have eaten this cheese, see your doctor as soon as possible. Healthy adults rarely fall ill.
