Brian Hoyer on fatal pick: It was a pretty bad decision
Houston Texans’ Brian Hoyer (7) throws against the Indianapolis Colts during the first half of an NFL football game Thursday, October 8, 2015, in Houston. The seven-year veteran completed 24 of 31 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception. After just one game he changed his mind and went with Mallett instead.
“He’s our starting quarterback”, coach Bill O’Brien said of Mallett. “I understand that, but we’re moving on to Jacksonville. I think overall he’s played pretty well”. Instead O’Brien kept him in and a despondent Mallett couldn’t believe it.
In the end, I thought that Brian showed me the most consistency, the most composure in certain situations, the experience in our system.
How did Mallett take the demotion?
O’Brien is not ready to make a decision.
-PASS DEFENSE: F. The Texans’ secondary allowed a 40-year-old quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck) and a 34-year-old wide receiver (former Texans star Andre Johnson) to connect for two touchdowns on them. Mallett (8-of-13 for 98 yards and a score) provided a spark and helped the game look closer (27-20) than it really was. O’Brien wouldn’t reveal his talk with the oft-criticized quarterback, who was seen sulking on the sidelines and left the field early before halftime. He took an illegal hit to the ribs on Houston’s next possession, forcing him out of the game.
Both quarterbacks were cautious with their comments after the game. “I don’t want to say that it was a flawless game, but I thought that Brian played well”. Never has a team been successful when they can not decide who the guy to lead the offense is and for a few reason O’Brien can not figure out that his vacillating is a huge reason for the teams 1-4 start.
Mallett told reporters after the game that he expected to be reinserted to the game once he got his breath back.
