Steven Matz making his pitch to be on Mets’ playoff roster
The team announced its roster Friday, several hours before Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
The Mets NLDS roster is set and Steven Matz is on it. Game 1 starts Friday night at 9:45 p.m. ET.
Matz has been struggling with a back problem.
Mets starter Steven Matz, who has been hampered by a back issue, threw approximately 90 pitches in a simulated game Thursday morning at the team’s complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He went 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in six starts at the major league level this season, including tossing six scoreless innings against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on July 5. “So he’s just going to meet us in New York”.
“In a flawless world that would be the plan”, manager Terry Collins said Thursday. “We certainly hope that he’s going to be part of the rotation”.
Assuming he does make the NLDS roster, it’s expected that Matz will start Game 4, if needed.
Jacob deGrom will start Game 1.
Sean Gilmartin will stay around as an emergency arm.
Bartolo Colon and Jon Niese are available out of the Mets bullpen, joining tradition relievers Jeurys Familia, Tyler Clippard, Addison Reed, Hansel Robles and Erik Goeddel.
