Witness Describes Train Hero Stabbing
Stone who was awarded the France’s highest honor and numerous rewards for his bravery, was apparently rescuing a woman and was attacked in the fight that escalated. He had boarded the train with a Kalashnikov rifle, pistol and box cutter.
Skarlatos issued a message of support on Thursday, tweeting: “Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today”.
Only weeks after sustaining stab wounds after helping to prevent a shooting on an European train and even getting praises as a hero, American serviceman Spencer Stone got stabbed again, this time after a night out with friends in California.
A source close to the investigation told AFP that Stone was seemingly attempting to protect a girl being harassed with several guys when he got stabbed. He declined to discuss any details about the surgery or whether any vital organs were damaged in the stabbing, beyond saying Stone had “significant injuries”.
“Given his history of recent events, he’s quite a fighter”, Kirk said.
Stone suffered deep slash wounds as he helped to overpower a heavily-armed gunman, 25-year-old Moroccan Ayoub El Khazzani, in the train attack on August 21.
“He’s considered a hero for local people and to have him come back to his hometown and encounter that, it’s something sad for the community”, said Natalie Aguilar of Sacramento.
Moments earlier, according to police, the decorated airman and four friends were inside a nearby bar. Store employee Ryan Romandia says the video was provided to Sacramento police.
The men were hailed as heroes and received worldwide accolades from the presidents of France and the United States.
The new video adds to the understanding of what occurred early Thursday, when Stone was stabbed repeatedly in the torso following what police described as an altercation that began between his friends and another group.
Bernard said the two suspects, who fled the scene in a late-model Toyota Camry, were Asian males in white T-shirts and blue jeans.
Hailermariam said the fight was three against one.
Bernard said that the stabbing was “not related to terrorism in any way” and that there’s no indication whoever stabbed Stone knew who he was.
Stone had served as an ambulance medical technician at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, prior to the attack. Authorities believe that alcohol may have been a factor.
In a news conference he said: “The assault does not appear to be a random act”.
The fight continues in the middle of the street just before 1 a.m. on Thursday.
