Round Rock HS Parent to Press Charges Against Cop
Thursday, a 14-year-old boy was choked and slammed to the ground at his high school by authorities – and now his father is planning to press charges against those who were involved.
A video, which was uploaded to Facebook on October 8, shows two police officers talking to 14-year-old Gyasi Hughes when suddenly, as he tries to slip past them, one of the officers grabs him around the neck and throws him to the ground.
The fourteen year old sophomore had asked a classmate for his football goggles back, but was refused them. Apparently Hughes began to go through his backpack, and that’s when the shoving started.
According to Round Rock Police, school administrators asked for assistance from officers after they were unable to deescalate a fight between two male students around 2:15 p.m.
In the video, right before the officer detained him, Gyasi can be seen putting his hand on the officer’s arm after he pushed his shoulder.
Police claim Hughes “refused to calm down” and was attempting to past them so he could continue to fight the other student.
No criminal charges have been filed and the Red Rock Police Department said it is now investigating the incident.
“Finally I asked him (the officer) to leave me alone and that’s the point when he grabbed me and took me down and tried to detain me”, said Gyasi. ‘I was amped up over the fight and wasn’t really thinking’.
No arrests were made after the altercation. The student said he was suspended and given two Saturday detentions.
After an assistant principal broke up the fight one of the student resource officers was called over and Hughes said he was told to walk away. We look forward to the continued partnership between our public safety partners in evaluating this incident and in our continued support of safe and secure schools. He said he was able to calm down when the officers took him to the detention center at school.
‘He was just emotional, ‘ Kashka said of his son, ‘which is mostly understood after being in a conflict just as he was’. Shortly thereafter the young man is grabbed by the throat and spun around before before dropped to the floor. “In terms of the officer it was definitely excessive force that was being used”.
But Hughes said that’s not how it happened at all.
