Antonio Cromartie says Odell Beckham Jr. is a ‘one-year wonder’

Now that the New York Giants have learned how to finish games, it’s time to take the next step. I love that. If I can draw two guys on one play, if I can draw seven guys on a fake reverse and we have a big play, I did my job. It’s not going away. In fact, at times it feels like the Eli Manning-to-Beckham combo is their entire offense.

Well, Tom Coughlin and the coaching staff has done exactly that, as the Giants are making the most of the players they have available to them, game planning to their strengths to make things work. And there has been a tangible effect on what Beckham has been able to do – and not do.

The Giants are where they were a year ago, sitting at. “He’s very young. Has he had productive years in 16 games? Yes”. Beckham is appealing the fine, but even if the penalty is reduced, the evidence is clear: Frustration has set in, and Beckham needs to adjust to his new reality. Once again, I understand there are only four games to go off of this season. “The 49ers are more concerned about Beckham”™s acrobatic receiving ability than his right jab, however. On the field or in the locker room, he carries himself with a self-assurance that matches his talents.

“I think, in general, we’ve haven’t been as clean (throwing to Beckham) outside the numbers as we’ve liked to be”, offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo said. His average is dragged down by the Giants thumping the Bills in Week 4.

“A play here or a play there and they are in position at home to win”, Coughlin said.

He didn’t have any star receivers when he was the Giants’ receivers coach from 1988-90. Last season, he seemed to alternate between being spectacular and superhuman.

But the coach knows that Beckham’s attitude is just as important as his technique.

“It’s week-to-week, ” Coughlin said. “And people went after him also”. He’s certainly still the best receiver on the team and one of the best in all of football. Or maybe he deals with injuries throughout his career.

Beckham has mustered 24 receptions for 307 yards and two touchdowns in four games this season but hauled in just five balls for 38 yards last week against the Bills.

‘I need to see it on an every-game basis, ‘ Cromartie said. “You have to be bigger than that”.

The Bills offered a word of warning to the 49ers and others about Beckham. He must rise above it or else be taken down with it. We want to get turnovers and give the offense as many chances to score as possible.

And disparage his accomplishments.

“Right now, he’s a one-year wonder”, Cromartie said Friday, via ESPN.

The Jets play “at” the Giants at MetLife Stadium on December. 6. His 14 touchdowns were second on that all-time list.
