Watch Humpback Whales Frolic Beneath The Northern Lights

Norwegian Public Broadcasting (NRK) photographer Harald Albrigsten captured the stunning images while testing his equipment.

In a recent interview, Albrigtsen recounted that he came across the humpback whales while he was carrying out tests on his equipment.

The photographer chose to come back to the spot the next day to see if he could get closer to the humpback whales.

“All of a sudden I came across a bunch of humpback whales that had been taking part in within the Northern Lights”, Albrigtsen reported to NRK, a Norwegian broadcasting service.

Stunning images of humpback whales hunting for food under the northern lights in Norway have been captured by a local journalist while testing his equipment.

Albrigsten already had a viral video claim to fame, having previously shot handsome footage of reindeer grazing under the Northern Lights. He was about to give up his hunt for the playful whales after unsuccessfully looking for them again but the animals chose to turn up again.

Auroras occur as a direct effect of solar activity that ejects a gas cloud, known as a coronal mass ejection, which then collides with the magnetic field of the Earth within two to three days.

This collision produces streams of charged particles which resultantly flows along the lines of the magnetic force into the Polar Regions.

More specifically, it happens when the charged particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms.

It’s not easy photographing the Northern Lights despite their brilliant appearance, Albrigsten noted.

Even though encountering the Northern Lights in Norway isn’t guaranteed, visitors might have a high chance of witnessing them in the north of the country or Svalbard.

Bring a tripod for your camera and get away from areas with lots of light.

A rule of thumb is to set the light sensitivity of your camera at 800 ISO and adjust the aperture fully open.

In various locations, such as Alaska or Greenland, the Northern Lights are mostly visible during nightfall of the year. Altitude affects the colors.
