Elections Canada policy allows women to wear niqab while voting
Somewhat to the surprise of what, in the north, is also called the “media élite”, a majority of Canadians seem to side with the Prime Minister: one survey has as much as eighty per cent of the population agreeing with Harper.
He noted that under the leadership of his Conservative Party, Canada has received and approved destination status from the Chinese government, witnessing a four-fold increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting this country over the past nine years. And there has been a great deal of attention paid to the full-face veil worn by a few Muslim women. The 29-year-old mother of four lives in Toronto.
She arrived in Canada from Pakistan in 2008.
Only UN-referred refugee files were audited as the government knows less about those cases when they arrive for processing than they do about refugees being brought to Canada by private groups, said a government source speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the system.
“If after review, policies/protocols are amended to require identification verification of all visitors, that would also mean removal of face coverings for comparison against the ID being presented”, Jacqui Delaney, a spokeswoman for Sen.
What do you think about the government’s decision to try to ban face coverings at citizenship ceremonies?
The woman whose fight to wear a niqab during her Canadian citizenship ceremony has unexpectedly become a dominant election issue fears the raging debate has tarnished Canadians’ views of her fellow Muslims.
Clinton said she couldn’t support the 12-country initiative because it appears to fall short as a way to create American jobs, boost wages and bolster national security. I refuse to fall into despair.
It started with the citizenship ceremonies, but now the Conservatives are looking to exclude Muslim women in other public spaces as well.
“They know that through the churches, it’ll be Christians or minorities to come”, he said. They have more flexibility to select who they want – and in turn, the government has more flexibility to approve or reject those applications.
What’s infuriating is that even if an inquiry were impractical, the prime minister should have the sense to initiate one anyway, to symbolically communicate his awareness and concern. And my stance on the niqab is a stance I have yet to hear anyone articulate on the left or the right: I am intensely ambivalent about it. It is questions like the one my student posed to me – and not necessarily blind prejudice or ignorance – that I believe contribute to the popularity of the niqab ban. “It is not a religious obligation in Islam”, said Jason Kenney. The party has talked about banning the niqab for all civil servants, just as France has done. It follows the Conservatives announcement last week of money for a tip line that members of the public could use to report “barbaric cultural practices” to the RCMP.
It is downright nauseating to watch Harper capitalize off real issues that actually do affect Muslim women, as well as women of all races and religions, only to further his lead amongst similarly intolerant citizens.
At the same time, the party has enjoyed a resurgence in the polls that has coincided with Harper’s public comment on the niqab.
Conservatives justify the position by saying it is central to core Canadian values.
