Georgia star running back Nick Chubb lost consciousness after knee injury
Or maybe it was just a temporary respite for the beleaguered Longhorns and their coach.
The Vols have a bye week before returning to action on October. 24 against Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
But this one ended differently.
The defeat was doubly painful for Georgia (4-2, 1-2 SEC), which lost star running back Nick Chubb to an injured left knee on the first offensive play.
“Our kids showed great resiliency. I just feel like he hit it and it drained out”.
That 28-point spurt didn’t end the game though. He was wildly erratic with his passes (whether his receivers were open or not), and the Tennessee offense didn’t move efficiently at all. He was clutch at the right time, though. Dobbs was also the first to do that. The nature of the injury is not clear-coach Mark Richt said afterward that he was optimistic Chubb wouldn’t need surgery-but it goes without saying that anything severe would be devastating for Chubb, a remarkable talent with a bright professional future who had established himself as a Heisman Trophy contender. The Bulldogs got the ball back with under two minutes left and got in position for a shot at the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete.
Georgia did the same to the Vols. There were times we got to him, pressured him, batted balls down.
It came down to quarterback play. Trailing 24-3, the Vols faced fourth-and-4 at the Georgia 47 with about two minutes remaining in the half.
“Josh Smith is going to make a play”.
Lambert completed 15-of-32 passes for 279 and two touchdowns.
Sony Michel was phenomenal for the Bulldogs after the unexpected and horrific injury to Chubb. Double-covered by a pair of Georgia natives wearing Tennessee’s smoky grey – Brian Randolph and Cameron Sutton – Mitchell’s leaping attempt at the catch was swatted away. “Yeah, we fumbled on the 1 and they took it back, but we took it 80 yards on them”.
Reggie Davis had the tying touchdown in his hands.
Then, Tennessee reached down and came up with a few true grit. “We made plays when we had to”.
Tennessee forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and scored again to make it 24-17 going into halftime. On first down, Dobbs found Josh Malone for a 23-yard gainer to the Georiga 1.
“We know football is a insane game”, Dobbs said.
On what proved to be the winning drive in the fourth quarter, Dobbs threw strikes of 34 yards to Ethan Wolf and 24 yards to Alex Ellis. Hurd bulled for 20 yards.
On September 19, Kentucky was the team which couldn’t finish drives or consolidate any momentum in a scratchy 14-9 loss to Florida.
Vols fans really only have their instincts: for eating, drinking, having sex in odd places, cheering for their stupid football team and generally acting like morons. To wit: Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey combined to go 11 for 31 for 106 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions against the Crimson Tide last week.
-Luke Falk, Washington State, threw for season-high 505 yards and five TDs, including an unusual scoring pass in the second overtime, helping the Cougars beat Oregon 45-38.
