UNT’s Dan McCarney is the next coach to be fired
The North Texas (0-3) will host Portland State (1-0) in a NCAA College Football rivalry at the Mean Green Stadium, Denton, TX on October 10, 5:00 PM.
It’s a fall from grace after 9-4 season in 2013 in which they won the Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl.
Which was the FCS team again?
The blowout to the Vikings, the most points an FBS team has given up to an FCS foe, sunk North Texas to 0-5 this season, with no loss coming by fewer than 14 points.
“The people here at North Texas are great, we couldn’t have been embraced or supported any better during my time here”, said McCarney. He was not originally scheduled to speak after the game, but called back reporters to share his feelings after Villarreal announced he had decided to make a change. UNT plays Western Kentucky on Thursday night, so it will likely be someone on the Mean Green staff. North Texas was outplayed from beginning to end, finishing with 670 total yards compared to 198 total yards from the Vikings.
“Obviously we have been really struggling lately, and Rick (Villarreal) felt it was in his best interests with the University and the athletic department and the football program to go another direction”, McCarney said. Villarreal said the school would come to terms with McCarney on a buyout in the next few days and said parting ways with a coach who led UNT to one of its best seasons in program history was not easy. “We didn’t sustain it. It has happened at North Texas and will again”.
