New California Climate Law Mandates 50 Percent Renewable Power by 2030
Specifically, the bill expands on the state’s pre-existing discrimination laws by prohibiting “a state agency from entering into contracts for the acquisition of goods or services of $100,000 or more with a contractor that discriminates between employees on the basis of gender identity in the provision of benefits”.
Several environmental groups joined together to help make the bill happen, including Californians Against Waste, Clean Water Action, Breast Cancer Fund, California League of Conservation Voters, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, Environment California, Heal the Bay, Los Angeles Water Keeper, Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Conservancy, and the Sierra Club.
Other bills the governor signed into law include Senate Bill21, authored by Sen.
California Governor Jerry Brown rebooted his thoughts on protecting personal data that is digital for searches from law enforcement.
Under the legislation, which was authored by San Diego Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, a Democrat, Californians who are legal residents and who visit the DMV to apply for, renew or change the address on a driver license would be registered to vote by the Secretary of State’s Office.
In particular, banning the regular use of antibiotics and requiring the collection of information on livestock use of antibiotics represent significant steps beyond the flawed and inadequate federal efforts.
Gov. Brown’s political opponents attacked what they described as the future consequences of this legislation.
Supporters of the legislation say the antibiotics are fed to mostly healthy animals such as cows, pigs and chickens to prevent disease in crowded industrial farms. Prospective voters will then be sent a notice giving them the chance to opt out of being registered. “By nearly every measure, California is already the most expensive state in which to build a business and raise a family”.
Automatic registration would become law in New Jersey, where the Democratic-controlled legislature passed their bill, if Republican Gov. Chris Christie wasn’t totally opposed to the concept.
“While I support the objective of this bill to allow easier passage across certain borders within the Western Hemisphere, I believe there are other means, such as the U.S. Passport Card, that achieve the same goal without imposing new burdens on the Department of Motor Vehicles”, Brown said.
Brown announced the vetoes Saturday, saying the state’s budget is still facing financial uncertainties. Nine of those bills, for example, would have created or expanded tax credits, which the governor said called for costs the state might not be able to pay in years to come.
Brown said the state’s budget is still facing financial uncertainties, and the tax credits would make balancing the state’s budget even more hard.
Still another bill Brown vetoed would have expanded a food donation credit.
