Woman drowns trying to save 9-year-old boy in Australia
The 26-year-old got into difficulty after helping the nine-year-old boy, believed to be a relative, in the water on Saturday afternoon near the Fingal Head Lighthouse, south of Coolangatta.
Ms Auelua was sitting on the rocks with friends and three young children when the incident occurred.
New Zealand tourist Aggie Auelua, 26, did not hesitate to jump into the water at Fingal Head, on the north coast of NSW, when her partner’s son was swept from the rocks and into rough seas.
Two men who were on the beach swam to the woman and boy, who they assisted.
Surf Life Saving Australia said off-duty lifesavers performed CPR on the woman before paramedics arrived.
A WOMAN is in a critical condition after she tried to save a boy swept into the ocean near Tweed Heads.
Tributes to the heroism of Ms Auelua (pictured) were seen throughout social media and while one person wrote: “To know a loved one sacrificed herself to save another…?”
The young boy, who was not injured, was conveyed to the hospital for examination.
Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
