Carson says he would have confronted shooter
Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson addressed the controversy over his statement regarding the Oregon shooting, stating, “they didn’t show the whole question” on Wednesday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “A$3 guy comes in, put the gun in my ribs”.
Lafferty, whose mother was one of the six teachers and staff killed in Newtown in addition to the 20 children and who has pushed for tighter gun regulations with the group Everytown For Gun Safety, said Carson’s comments were tone-deaf. Mathew Downing in particular, who survived the shooting because the gunman spared him, told CNN: “I’m fairly upset he said that”.
Carson’s campaign says his remarks have only fueled support from donors.
The issue of gun control often comes to the forefront after mass shootings, with Democrats calling for stricter laws and Republicans, including Carson, maintaining that tougher reforms would not necessarily prevent massacres.
On Monday, he wrote on Facebook, “I never saw a body with bullet holes that was more devastating than taking the right to arm ourselves away”. And I just said, “I believe that you want the guy behind the counter”‘.
“No, I just said nothing about them, I said what I would do”, Carson said.
The Holocaust would have been less deadly had more people in Europe been armed, he said.
Carson spoke to Business Insider while promoting his new book, “A More ideal Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties”.
“We need to be studying these individuals, being able to figure out who is the unsafe person so we can intervene, not only to save the lives of people who are being shot, but to save the shooter”, Carson told host Megyn Kelly.
Baltimore Police said Thursday that they could not find any report related to the incident based on the little information that Carson had provided.
Carson also suggested to USA Today that kindergarten instructors should have weapons training.
