Nick Price offers comfort to Anirban Lahiri after costly Presidents Cup miss
He stood on the 18th green with his hands clasped together, the tips of his fingers covering his mouth.
“He brings a great sense of humour to the team”, Price told a news conference at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, venue for the 11th Presidents Cup which is being hosted for the first time in Asia and begins Thursday.
At that moment, rarely has such a competition seen such a swift turnaround.
Anirban Lahiri, returning to action after sitting out of two sessions, played his heart out but could not get the putter going in the Four-Ball in the fourth session of the Presidents Cup.
The Indian debutant looked set to have a putt from inside 1m to win his match against Chris Kirk until the American rolled in a superb 5m putt of his own with their match all square.
Kirk’s putt dropped on the final turn. He never expected Lahiri to “unfortunately” miss that putt, and that he hated to see his opponent to bow out like that.
There have been grip extended putts, lipouts, chunked betting chips on and all around the canary inside the par-5, 542-yard hollow, as list of 7 of one’s 12 singletons matches up with met the 18that gives the best results for your skin problems.
“Never give up. I guess, expect the unexpected”, Leishman said. “And I wasn’t in the script”. He spoke with poise, exuding the kind of graciousness that already has made him popular with the PGA Tour players he will join next year in America. The most famous missed putt in a Ryder Cup was by Bernhard Langer in 1991 at Kiawah Island.
Worldwide captain Nick Price offered to be the cheerleader for Lahiri and Bae afterward, saying, “They are part of our team, and we will leave here as a team”.
There are stars. And there are nightmares.
“This is certainly not how I would’ve wanted to have my first Presidents Cup play out”.
“I do feel awful right now obviously. Tomorrow is another day and if I can get one or two (putts) to go in, I should be fine and I think my game is not far from that”, he concluded.
He added, “I was pretty sure what the line was and I made a good stroke”.
Lahiri and Matsuyama will sit out for Friday’s Fourballs, while the Americans have kept their only losing duo, Reed and Kuchar out and brought in Bill Haas and Chris Kirk. Lahiri, said “Adam played well, but it was a case of cold putter with him, too”.
“I had Bubba come up to me about a minute after we finished and he said he had done the same exact thing”. I’m just so proud of the team.
Lahiri still knew his short putt for a halve would be critical.
“I didn’t do my part”, Lahiri said.
Fowler’s putting, he said, was on a different level. Price also consoled him privately and in public.
“I am gutted”, said Lahiri, who admitted that he just could not come to terms with the greens and putted the worst in his life.
“We know how big golf has become in India, and all of us hope that maybe one day The Presidents Cup will go to India”. He was headed to his next tournament in Macau and had two events in Malaysia and China at the end of the month.
