Will Fells lose his foot to MRSA?
I was vaguely aware that New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells was out with an injury, but I didn’t know he is out for the year and that he has MRSA in his foot.
According to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Fells is likely going to have to undergo more surgery to clean out the infection.
Fells was placed in an intensive care unit on Friday, and reportedly has had five surgeries. Fells has been placed on the IR, but it’s up in the air as to whether he’ll play again. “We still do not know the reason for the infection or where it came from”.
Based on a directive from the National Football League and the NFL Players Association, the Giants Wednesday morning had a briefing with their players about what the team is doing to ensure their safety after Fells had to be hospitalized. After a week of ankle and foot pain, Fells’ wife took him to the emergency room on October. 2 with a 104-degree temperature. While doctors hope to avoid amputating his foot there is concern the infection could travel from his bone into his bloodstream, something which can have the most serious of consequences.
Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said “this is a serious situation that has been taken seriously from the beginning”. The infection could turn out to be career-ending. The Giants have already declared Fells out for the season.
The team is working with infectious disease specialists and scrubbed its locker room, training rooms and meetings room.
