Two shot at Texas Southern University
Texas Southern University in Houston is on lockdown after a reported shooting at a student housing facility near the campus.
Witnesses reported seeing at least three suspects run into the building after the shooting. Houston Police tweeted early Friday afternoon that a possible suspect had been detained. A third suspect is being sought, but police say it is not an active shooter situation.
One shooting victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where the person later died.
Two people were reportedly shot at an apartment on or very near the Texas Southern University campus on Friday, October 9, 2015.
The incident was the third shooting on or near the campus in less than a week, though it’s unclear whether they are related. On Tuesday, one person was injured by a gunshot on campus during an argument. “It could hit anybody”. Apparently Friday’s shooting is the second one this week; however, this notion was not confirmed by police.
Rudley said the student who was killed was a freshman at the school, though the student’s name and age haven’t been released. “Too many guns are accessible to students and to people in general in our community”, said Dr. Rudley. Silva said officers are investigating whether the incidents are connected.
KTRK reports a shooting happened at an apartment complex owned by the campus.
Police say there was another shooting at the same complex Thursday night. Rudley said classes would resume on a normal schedule Monday. Counselors from the University Counseling Center will be made available to all students.
Administrators promised that campus security and university police would increase patrols.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, university officials said student Steven Jones was arrested immediately after the shooting and faced one count of first-degree murder and three of aggravated assault.
