Oregon Shooting Update: Chris Harper-Mercer Ranted About Not Having Girlfriend
A few staff and students returned to the scene of Thursday’s shootings at the Umpqua Community College campus, with professional groups on hand for those wishing to discuss their experiences of the murders. When it was over, 10 people, including the shooter, were dead, and Lacey was covered in blood.
Police released a statement on behalf of the family of one of the victims, Lucas Eibel. She wasn’t ready to tell the tale herself, so she asked her father to stand in.
Scroggins, senior pastor at New Beginnings Church of God, used the pulpit Sunday to share the testimony of how, with his last breaths, Treven Anspach saved his daughter Lacey’s life. Journalists were not allowed onto the campus in the small town of Roseburg as grief counselors prepared to help people cope with the tragedy. “I don’t know”, said Scroggins, his voice cracking with emotion. It’s not like he was mean.
Anastasia Boylan was shot during the attack.
At Garden Valley Church, about 250 congregants stood at their seats as vocalists sang theChristian ballad “We Shall Not Be Shaken”, then watched a slide show about the victims after the minister asked children in the sanctuary to be excused.
He apparently demanded to know his victims’ religious beliefs before opening fire on the campus and killed himself after a shoot-out with police.
Authorities initially refused to name the gunman, and shed no light on his motive. The official says that in the multi-page document left behind for authorities last week, Christopher Harper-Mercer also complained that others around him thought he was insane.
Hanlin said the shooter’s death has been ruled a suicide.
“She was crying and saying, ‘Grandma, he killed my teacher!”
Before the service, Scroggins shared Lacey’s story.
PeaceHealth Medical Center in Springfield said Monday that one patient remains in critical condition and the other two are in fair condition.
“Officers responded immediately… there was an exchange of gunfire, (and) the shooter was neutralized at that point in time”, the sheriff said. Webb said she occasionally heard him having temper tantrums in his apartment. “Further details about the President’s travel to Oregon will be made available in the coming days”, the official told CNN. But at times he was overwhelmed – like when he describes the simple act of taking her to school Thursday morning.
“Every time something like this happens, they talk about it and nothing is done”, Mercer said.
“In the past”, said local pastor Ted Johnson, “you could drive on campus at the high school or at UCC, and it would not be uncommon to see pickups (trucks) all over the parking lot with gun racks and guns in the back window”. This past weekend, she and her mom and a sister drove an hour north to Eugene to get their nails done.
A neighbor, Bronte Harte, said Harper-Mercer “seemed really unfriendly” and would “sit by himself in the dark in the balcony with this little light”. “This won’t hurt very long.’ Then he would shoot him”, Salas told AP.
She got up and began tending the wounded, fashioning her scarf as a tourniquet on the limb of a bleeding woman.
The worst mass shooting in recent Oregon history was raising questions about security at the college with about 3,000 students. Her ultimate goal is to be a surgeon.
