Large blast in central Kabul ‘targets foreign troops convoy,’ North Atlantic Treaty Organisation casualties
Sunday’s explosion caused civilian casualties, the ministry said but did not elaborate.
The US-led Resolute Support military coalition in Kabul confirmed that one of its convoys was struck by a bomb.
Tolo News reported that security forces have arrived at the scene and blocked the road to traffic while ambulances take casualties, which include civilians, to hospital.
However, he added the security forces were able to wipe out militants from a police district on Saturday and re-establish law and order there.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the rush-hour attack.
“It was a suicide bombing against a foreign-forces convoy in a crowded part of the city and there are casualties”.
The latest attack comes almost two weeks after the militants seized the northern city of Kunduz, the most significant gain for the Taliban since its ouster from power in 2001. The current Afghan government risks losing nationwide trust, if it continues to alienate tribes that often implicitly back the Taliban.
During their annual Spring Offensive, the Taliban set its sights on northern parts of Afghanistan, particularly centering on the Kunduz Province.
The gubernatorial spokesman said the operation was launched after insurgents attacked security posts in the area.
