Protests as President Obama visits college shooting families
See, I’m too dense to understand his thoughts, so I just foolishly rely on what he says and what his actions for the past 6-plus years have indicated. “That means no infringement”.
Jeb Williams, 14, held a sign telling Pres. Obama to “go golf”. He has repeatedly and ever more strongly called on lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws, but to no avail.
Obama is visiting Roseburg as part of a four-day West Coast trip. The measure would at least partly close what is widely known as the “gun show loophole”.
As Roseburg buries its dead, it’s also trying to heal. Now I have to worry, when I hear a noise in the night, that it isn’t a burglar, but the President, come to take my guns.
The presidential helicopter touched down at the Roseburg airport and a motorcade whisked him to a meeting site.
Mr Obama said the families wanted him to know how much they appreciated the outpouring of support from around the country.
There have been two very different sets of responses to last week’s mass shooting in Roseburg, Ore.
A few of the protesters carried holstered handguns. Alan Montgomery made no attempt to hide his holsters.
Don Moody, an aircraft machinist who drove five hours from Seattle to wave a sign at Obama’s arrival, couldn’t agree more.
The president has never been popular in this corner of southern Oregon.
SALLY TELFORD: Our Second Amendment says no infringement.
JC: Well, they had 226 deaths in 2014 by gun. But today, it’s about the families.
BLACKSTONE (on-camera): And he said to you? And the Governor, obviously, is paying a lot of attention to how we can be most helpful to the families.
Obama has been calling for stronger gun control laws in the aftermath of the shooting, and that call has grated on the nerves of the many gun advocates in the northwest USA where the school is located.
President Barack Obama on Friday met with victims’ relatives of a deadly rampage at an Oregon community college.
The incident marked the third shooting on or near the campus in less than a week, though it is unclear whether the shootings were related.
NBC News national correspondent Miguel Almaguer is there.
But regardless of agenda, today was about families and the victims.
On the same day of Obama’s visit, a gunman killed one and wounded three at a college campus in Arizona, according to officials.
“It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel”, Obama said October. 1.
The shooting has sparked new talk about gun violence, though history suggests the prospects for enacting laws are highly unlikely.
Protesters also carried signs voicing support for Sheriff John Hanlin, who has been at the forefront during news conferences about the college shooting.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE PROTESTER: Presidents are supposed to protect liberty – uphold and defend the Constitution.
ALMAGUER: Roseburg has heard the argument before. “We want quality of guns – in the right hands at the right time”.
ALMAGUER: Ten days later, Kennedy was killed by a deranged gunman. “Our town is in mourning”. The small crowd around them tried to help, but agreement was hard to come by.
ALMAGUER: In a country divided over guns, this community is united in remembering those who are gone. It used Facebook to ask thousands of people to join them in their Roseburg protest.
The president thanked the community and state of Oregon for helping the families recover. The president left Roseburg just before 2 p.m.
