Jets top Devils for second road win
The Jets took a 1-0 lead 1:13 into the second period when Scheifele whipped a shot from the left faceoff circle past Schneider, and Wheeler doubled the lead with a wrist shot of his own from the left faceoff circle 2:43 later.
Mark Scheifele also scored, Mathieu Perreault had two assists in the three-goal second period and Michael Hutchinson made 20 saves as the Jets’ defensive play helped them win for the second time in two nights. Former Jet Jiri Tlusty was credited with the powerplay goal and it was 2-1.
For the Winnipeg Jets, the goal this season is to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after a short visit to the postseason last spring.
Wheeler came down the left side and wristed a shot past Devils goalie Cory Schneider. Coach John Hynes also announced that Patrik Elias, Travis Zajac, Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique will rotate as alternate captains.
Winnipeg, which beat Boston 6-2 on Thursday night, overwhelmed in the wake of being outshot 3-0 in the opening minutes.
But any momentum the Devils might have generated after Tlusty’s goal was snuffed out by Ladd’s power play score.
NOTES: New Jersey named D Andy Greene the 11th captain in franchise history prior to the game. He said hockey is more a team game and it’s a lot harder for one player to make a team better.
“Coming in as coaches and management we wanted an opportunity to meet with the players throughout the summer and get to know them and we had a feel coming into the year”, Hynes said. “Games are only going to get tougher as we go to New York”, LW Ladd said. F Kyle Palmieri made his Devils’ debut, becoming the second New Jersey native to play for the team…. “We made a nice showing not letting escaping”. However, I think this game will be a little closer to the vest than the result in Boston produced last night and as such I like the under in this one. We know the way he wants us to play the system and we just didn’t execute. “We started very low”.
Henrique said of learning Hynes’ system, “I mean, it’ll take a bit to get it where it’ll be consistent, you’re not thinking about it, obviously, there’s a lot to learn throughout camp, but I thought we did a great job getting better and improving every day. We have to just address the good things and bad things that we had done tonight and we have to move forward”.
