Bills rally from 10-point deficit, beat Titans 14-13
That is only good enough for 3rd place in the AFC East, and the Bills are not playing catch up with the 3-0 New England Patriots and the 3-1 New York Jets. They came at a time when the Bills’ offense looked lifeless and were down 10 points to the Tennessee Titans in the third quarter.
Buffalo moved the ball just seven yards on their two series.
The biggest concern for the Bills in this Week 5 matchup is not beating themselves. Instead of trying to climb back to.500, the Titans could have been attempting to build on an even record. Marcus Mariota completed 27 of 44 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions.
Mariota also rushed for 11 yards on third-and-eight at the Tennessee 49. Both missed their second-straight game Sunday, and the Bills desperately need them back in the lineup. Mariota led the team and McCluster and Sankey followed with 20 yards each.
One reason to get excited: The Titans didn’t allow the Bills to do much on offense and they converted first downs on offense, even after a few penalties gave them tough down and distances.
The Titans also had four sacks and recovered a fumble on a punt return to set up their touchdown. Buffalo couldn’t run the ball and quarterback Tyrod Taylor didn’t have success through the air, either. Dan Carpenter added the extra point. Taylor had three runs for 51 yards in the scoring drive. A 41-yard field goal by Succop made it 13-7 with 9:41 remaining. The field goal capped a 13-play 72-yard drive which included a 22-yard Mariota run. On 3rd and 23 from their own 7, Taylor scrambled 24 yards for the first down. He had plenty of room to run on the third-and 23, a play that put the Bills near midfield with a horse-collar penalty on Titans linebacker Zach Brown.
Officials forced him out for a play, but Taylor still had work to do.
The Titans return to Nissan Stadium on October. 18 at noon when they play Miami at home.
The Bills are 2-1 when they score first this season. They were idle this week. What Taylor did succeed in, though, is running right over one of the Titans coaches on the sideline after being pushed out of bounds. The best way to take away short, quick passing attacks are for the cornerbacks to show the ability to break it up. With the team torn apart by injuries, their Week 5 match up against the fresh Titans has the opportunity to be a season defining game.
