The 29-year-old Kenyan finished the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 25 seconds, while fellow Kenyan Sammy Kitwara was 25 seconds back for his second consecutive runner-up finish in Chicago. He followed that performance with a third-place showing at the 2014 Chicago Marathon in a new personal best of 2.04.32. Florence Kiplagat, 28, also from Kenya, won the woman’s race with an unofficial time of 2:23.33, according to WGN TV. He became a pro runner in 2008-prior to that he worked as a gardner.
And Deena Kastor, 42, broke the USA master’s record by almost a minute as she finished seventh in 2:27:47, her fastest time since 2006. Third finisher Birhane Dibaba of Ethiopia (2:24:24) felt only the wind kept the leaders from a time near 2:20.
On Sunday morning, the 2015 Bank of America Chicago Marathon winded around the Windy City.
Only when Chumba made his move did the pace pick up with the Kenyan, Kitwara and Ethiopian Abera Kuma forming a group of three before Kuma, who was running his fifth marathon in 20 months, faded. For the second time in as many years, Kitwara was the race’s runner-up.
Kiplagat, a two-time Berlin Marathon victor, claimed the 2015 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:23:33.
The highest-placing American was Luke Puskedra.
“From Chicago to Rio, which is awesome, we’re honored to be selected by the Paralympics this race to send our top two American men and women to Rio”, said marathon director Carey Pinkowski.
