Enda says there won’t be an election until spring 2016
Sources said Ms Burton had reacted badly to a report in The Irish Times that the Taoiseach was leaning strongly towards a November election.
Prime Minister Enda Kenny on Sunday said he did not intend to call a parliamentary election in Ireland before early next year, seeking to halt widespread speculation that he would call a snap vote next month.
“I think the Taoiseach is very honourable, has always been very honourable”.
“It is safe to say we were all a bit stunned by his comments”. “I want to stay the course and see the work that we have started finished”, she said on Thursday.
Don’t you know there are more important matters at hand? Yes, we will have different programmes. “This is about the future and people have to have the choice of continued stability and investment”.
However, speaking today on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics, Kenny indicated that he has no reason to hold an election before the end of the year.
However she added there would be a few consequences to holding an early election, such as the collapse of the Banking Inquiry probe.
Ms Burton said she remained “very confident” that it will be 2016 before voters go to the polls.
“The Labour party is ready for an election at any time”.
Fianna Fáil said it was hard to take the Taoiseach seriously, as party leader Micheal Martin claimed it was Enda Kenny who fuelled uncertainty during the week by deliberately dodging questions in the Dáil.
Mr Kenny leads the Government with the support of minority partner Labour.
But yesterday, Mr Kenny said it was crucial for both parties to head into the election on a joint platform.
