Jay Haas reveals Presidents Cup emotions
“The success of the recent 2011 Presidents Cup and 2013 World Cup of Golf has reinforced Victoria’s stature as a global golf destination and make the area a ideal choice to welcome these esteemed competitions back within the next four years”. Bae is playing his final event before his mandatory military service starts in South Korea.
Phil Mickelson studied the line of the putt from both sides, and then he stood over an imaginary golf ball about halfway to the hole and gently swung his putter to make sure he had the right read. “But it just so happened that that’s how it played out, and I certainly did not…”
“I feel so bad for Anirban, as we all do”, Price said.
The final session was not without its share of heartbreak.
The global team appeared to be in position to win during the 12 singles matches that wrapped up the four-day event at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea.
Price had other reasons to cheer.
Australian Adam Scott pounded Rickie Fowler 6 & 5 to put the first point on the board for the worldwide Team, but the United States quickly picked up 1 1/2 points, as Dustin Johnson defeated Danny Lee 2 & 1 and Patrick Reed halved his match with Louis Oosthuizen.
The Americans, up 4-1 after the opening session, had their lead cut to 51/2-41/2.
Captain Haas said afterwards that he gave his son a pep talk down the closing stretch: “I told him, ‘Come on, win one for your mom, your mom deserves this, ‘” he said. They were the only two players who had not earned a point for their teams, and the normally stoic Kirk was so excited that he slammed his fist toward the ground when his putt went in.
The U.S. Team holds a 9.5-8.5 lead.
Lahiri, who didn’t have his best game all week, showed enormous heart to square his match with PGA TOUR star Chris Kirk thanks to a brilliant up and down birdie at the par-4 14. Bae’s chip failed to reach the green and ran back down towards him.
“This is what we all came here for – for it to be exciting tomorrow”, global captain Nick Price said.
“Oh, my gosh”, he said as more tears fell. They didn’t lose the hole twice, just lost the hole once and suffered a one-hole penalty. Spieth was so certain he was going to hole out that he asked caddie Michael Greller to get the ball out of the hole for him before he hit the shot. “We instead, won that match, not only we tied, we won, but that flipped two points and ended up being a point difference”. The 21-year-old Englishman shot five birdies in his final round to win by two strokes and finish on a 15-under total of 269.
Sang-moon needed to win the final hole to halve his match with Haas Jr, but conceded after following a poor chip into the 18th with a missed putt. And while it likely cost the Americans a half-point, Mickelson didn’t seem too bothered.
Day didn’t bite on Mickelson’s barb. Let’s take a look at how all 12 matches played out. Haas then went and won the 18th to go 2 UP and meet his team and father.
But Spieth rolled in a seven-footer for a birdie to square the match and repeated the feat for a winning par at 18. Grace followed with a pair of birdies for a 2-up lead, and the Spieth-Johnson tandem didn’t put up much of a fight.
Kirk’s putt dropped on the final turn. It was in singles play that the US Women won the Solheim Cup earlier this year. “So it was “Merry Christmas” to the other guys”.
“On 18, I guess it wasn’t meant to be, unfortunately. It was a very great moment for me and my dad”.
