Indian fisherman arrested, two boats seized by Sri Lankan Navy
His comments come following the arrest of 19 Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy on Saturday off the coast of Vadamaradchi East. Sri Lanka’s main opposition leader R. Sampanthan was quoted, as saying during a debate in parliament on Friday that incursions by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters and vice-versa was a pressing issue between the two nations that needed to be addressed amicably. To expose Lanka’s insincerity, Karunanidhi pointed to the Lanka government initially supporting a resolution at the UNHRC and the Sri Lankan President opposing it the next day in an interview.
This includes an agreement on science and technology that is being worked out and which the two countries hope to sign next year, according to Vadivel Krishnamoorthy, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in southern India.
Nineteen Indian fishermen who allegedly breached the maritime boundary with Sri Lanka were arrested and handed over to the Department of Fisheries.
‘Despite my repeated requests to you to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan authorities and ensure the early release of the fishermen and their boats, there has been little response and the fishermen have suffered prolonged detention, ‘ the Chief Minister pointed out.
“A joint exercise where their navies are engaged”.
The fishermen were arrested when they were fishing in Palk Straits.
TNA MP M.A.Sumanthiran points out that the fishermen in the Northern Province are worst affected.
