Mariners part with manager McClendon
McClendon finishes his Mariner managerial career with a record of 163-161, the only Seattle manager other than Lou Piniella to have a record over.500.
McClendon’s future became tenuous when the man who hired him, general manager Jack Zduriencik, was sacked August 28.
“I have a great deal of respect for Lloyd, as a person and as a manager”, Dipoto said in a statement. “This isn’t an indictment of Lloyd”. He has the type of passion and energy that I’m looking for, and that we will value in building a staff going forward. “That is what we’ll do”.
McClendon is under contract for 2016, the Times reports. Especially not easy when he, his players and everyone else were expecting so much more.
McClendon: “Screw it. I’ll clean out my locker”.
“I think that lends to credibility in a clubhouse”, he said.
As for Lloyd McClendon, I will always recall the way he smiled after a defeat. An Indianapolis native who played for the Mets, Astros and Dodgers from 1993-01, Bogar spent this past season as a special assist to the GM of the Angels which, until July, was Dipoto.
Donaldson left Game 1 following a slide into second base on which he took a knee to the head from Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor, who also was limping after the play.
The Braves won 14 division titles the next 15 years, during which Schuerholz had the ability to make sure Cox never felt ignored, keeping him actively involved in the decision-making, and building one of the most impactful GM/manager alignments the game will ever know. “Players need to be energized, to be inspired to do something”, Dipoto said.
Martinez was brought in midseason to replace Howard Johnson as hitting coach.
Last time McClendon managed a major league ball club was back in 2001 when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates until 2005.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times first reported the news, and Greg Johns of MLB.com passed along confirmation from the team.
