McDonnell’s Corruption Conviction Upheld
Bob McDonnell waits in line as he arrives at the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals for a hearing on the appeal of his corruption conviction, in Richmond, Va., Tuesday, May 12, 2015. The court also found that the jury’s not guilty verdict of two counts of making a false statement must stand, the court said.
While McDonnell’s attorneys have vowed previously to take the case to the US Supreme Court – and his wife is pursuing a separate, ongoing appeal – it appears he now will be sent to federal prison to start serving his two-year sentence.
Barry J. Pollack, a white-collar defense lawyer in Washington, D.C., who is not involved in the case, said McDonnell probably could remain free by asking the appeals court for rehearing. “I remain highly confident in the justice system and the grace of our God that full vindication will come in time”.
McDonnell challenged several parts of his trial and conviction, including the instructions given to his jury and whether the evidence against him was sufficient to convict.
The court did not deal with ex- first lady Maureen McDonnell’s conviction.
Williams gave Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen $177,000 in gifts and loans. Federal prosecutors, however, argued that his actions were the very definition of public corruption.
“The fight for justice for our client is far from over”, the team added.
“It’s likely that he will file a petition for rehearing before the entire 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals”, Albert said.
The governor also received a Rolex watch, and drove Williams’ white Ferrari from Williams’ lake house to the governor’s mansion.
After a recitation of McDonnell’s troubled financial status while in office, and Williams’ ambitions for his dietary supplement, Anatabloc, the opinion details in the most granular fashion the meetings, gifts, conversations, and emails among McDonnell, his wife and Williams. The evidence at trial made clear that Star executives wanted Appellant to use his prominence and influence to the company’s advantage.
