Quick Hits: Mississippi State defeats Troy Trojans 45-17
Mississippi State jumped out to a 38-0 lead in the first half against Troy and cruised to a 45-17 victory on Saturday.
Over under has seen the Troy Trojans go a 2-1 so far, while the Mississippi State Bulldogs go 1-3. Troy has played two Power 5 opponents and hasn’t kept the score within 20 points. The Jaguars held Troy to just three points in the second half to lock in a win against the Trojans.
Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers (12) prepares to throw a pass during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., Saturday, October 10, 2015. While in the game Prescott completed 3 of 6 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, adding just three yards on the ground. He rushed for 11 yards on two carries. “I played against Northwestern State a good bit and I had a few success”.
“Today we had a lot of guys playing nasty defense”, Mullen said.
After a first down run from Andre Flakes, Brandon Silvers dropped back and was stripped near the end zone.
Fitzgerald also threw a couple of long touchdown passes, a 28-yarder to De’Runnya Wilson and a 49-yarder to Donald Gray.
In addition to Prescott’s illness, wide receivers Gabe Myles (left foot), Joe Morrow (shoulder), and tight end Gus Walley (hand), who missed last week’s game against Texas A&M, didn’t play.
With a big lead, freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was under center instead of Dak Prescott.
Troy (1-4) scored twice in the third quarter but mustered only a field goal in the fourth.
Troy ate up most of the third quarter with a 9-minute, 77-yard drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown run by Dontreal Pruitt.
Brandon Burks had a touchdown of his own the next drive. Troy couldn’t score again until the final minute of the game when Jed Solomon hit 21-yard field goal. Prescott’s streak spans five games and 21 quarters dating back to last season’s Orange Bowl.
Pruitt finished the game 12-of-17 for 90 yards through the air, while rushing for 56 yards on 18 carries.
