GBBO winner Nadiya is an ‘inspiration’ to British Muslims
In previous Bake Offs, Berry had tended to sniff suspiciously at t he unusual flavours and exotic concoctions dreamed up by contestants of different race, but this time she seemed charmed by Nadiya’s humour and off- beat taste combos – bubble gum gateau one week and a fantabulous peacock made of coloured chocolate.
After dedicating her life to being a housewife, Nadiya revealed after her victory that she would “never put boundaries on herself again” after succeeding in the hit show. Oh, the excitement! How am I going to spend my Wednesday nights now… maybe I won’t be putting away that kitchen scales just yet.
“I like to keep challenging myself, which is good I think”.
“Bizarrely, I found the final was one of the least scariest [rounds] and I really enjoyed the experience the most out of all the filming days”.
Well wishes begin to flood in for her from social media as well.
Nadiya impressed in the signature bake with her iced buns, half of them cardamom and almond, and half nutmeg and sour cherry.
Her family is originally from Bangladesh, where desserts aren’t a big feature of mealtimes, but encouraged by a school home economics teacher, Nadiya now delivers lovely masterpieces at family occasions.
Nadiya has previously said: “I’m just as British as anyone else, and I hope I have proved that”.
A batch of raspberry millefeuille also earned her first place in the technical challenge.
Last night’s final was seen by an average audience of more than 13 million viewers as Nadiya Hussain was crowned victor of the sixth series.
Speaking of hiding her trophy, she said: “I wrapped it in many layers of brown paper, put it in a suitcase and hid it under the bed in case anybody saw it”, she told PA.
“Cake making offers an appealing business model especially to mums like me as it allows you to work from home in a very creative industry and, most importantly, to control the hours you work”. “She nailed that final and it was the best tasting final we ever had”, said Paul.
Ian said: “Nine months of keeping secrets, basically, and now it’s like – no, I can pretty much say everything and it’s absolutely fine”.
“My husband Abdal’s favourite cake is lemon drizzle, so I chose to make that”.
Though her confidence undoubtedly grew over the weeks, there were a number of memorable wobbles that threatened to throw her off course.
But that isn’t the only thing that her success on the show is likely to achieve. ”Someone like her is great because she challenges the stereotypes”, said Adeeba Malik.
She added: “I’ve had enough now”.
