Ubisoft, on the other hand, are trying to avoid all this by remaining autonomous from a Hollywood studio, and also by bringing in strong filmmaking talent (in Assassin’s Creed’s case, Snowtown and Macbeth director Justin Kurzel) and involving actors in the storytelling process.
Baronnet went on to reveal that the movie’s budget is in between $150-200 million and Ubisoft hopes to attract a wider audience beyond video game fans.
Baronnet was speaking with French magazine Premiere, talking about the studio’s vision for this movie he revealed that it’s going to be modelled on films such as Batman Begins and Blade Runner.
The translation may be imprecise – Slashfilm even admits it was mostly done by machine – but it appears he expects the finished film to define a standard of quality; just as those earlier films did the same for their respective genres. There was no script, no studio or anything.
We told [Fassbender] that we would build the project together, we had a huge brand and we wanted to make a film that was inspired to the characteristics of Batman Begins and Blade Runner. That is why we tend to.
That’s a bold comparison, but this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that a lot has gone into ensuring that this adaptation of Assassin’s Creed doesn’t make the same mistakes as the likes of Hitman: Agent 47 and Doom.
Video game movies so often feel like lazy, half-assed affairs put together by a committee unfamiliar with the source material (Hitman: Agent 47, anyone?).
He also touched on Tom Hardy’s upcoming portrayal of special operative Sam Fisher in the live-action adaptation of “Splinter Cell”. It’s been quite a few time since we received an update on that one, and while Baronnet didn’t give too much away about where things now stand with it, he did at least confirm that the British actor is still attached.
Baronnet also said that it was structurally challenging to develop an assassin because the two characters Fassbender will be playing are in different time periods. No such concessions to the older machines have been made this year- if you want to play Assassin’s Creed now, you will need a PS4, an Xbox One, or a high level PC.
The company has a similar arrangement with Tom Hardy for an adaptation of Splinter Cell. “We worked a lot with him on the character”. We choose writers who are not necessarily stars but people who have understood the universe. With arbitration returning us as we fund. The beauty of being a small structure is that no contingencies that lead us to release films in greenlighter quickly. We needed them for their expertise. It is the combination of the three who built this scenario. Four years of development for Assassin! The obsession that we had was to find actors among the best, if not the best.
Ubisoft is cooperating with New Regency with control in creation development, and they promise to keep the content and soul of the game in the film.
