Injured Spain duo Silva and Morata to miss Ukraine game
The Spain global was stretchered off in the first half of the European champions’ 4-0 win over Luxembourg on Friday with an injury to his lower leg.
They will go to the tournament having won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, along with the 2010 World Cup, but Del Bosque has had to rebuild the side following the poor display in Brazil.
He added his second with 10 minutes left after a good pass from substitute Nolito saw Jordi Alba’s shot saved only for the full back to hook the ball across the goal (although it appeared to have gone out of play) for Alcacer to score from close range.
Santi Cazorla scored his second goal in competitive game for Spain, from a total of 11.
In Spain’s group, a goal from Stanislav Dragun meant Slovakia lost 1-0 at home to Belarus and missed the chance to join Spain and Switzerland in qualifying. It knows a win in Luxembourg will be enough due to its superior head-to-head record over Ukraine, who has to better its result despite playing Spain in its final match.
Group E leaders England had already qualified and as they extended their ideal record into a ninth game, Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling scoring in a 2-0 win over Estonia, the interest was in the battle behind them.
The official website of Spain’s national football team reported that Silva has strained the internal ligament on his right ankle and will miss their Euro 2016 qualifier match against Ukraine.
Elsewhere, Switzerland also made sure their personal spreading utilizing a 7-0 beat San Marino.
Ukraine’s hopes of qualifying automatically out of Group C were reinvigorated as Yevhen Seleznyov and Artem Kravets found the target against FYR Macedonia in Skopje.
With the kind of form Spanish are in, it will be very hard for Luxembourg to win this one.
Del Bosque’s side have won their last six qualifiers on the trot and are unbeaten on home soil in 31 matches, winning 27 and drawing four.
Sweden remain two points behind in third, Marcus Berg and Paris Saint-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic netting in their routine 2-0 home win against Liechtenstein.
As for Group G, Montenegro are no longer in the running for a top-three finish after going down, 3-2, to Austria.
