USF football player fired gun on campus at dorm
A University of South Florida football player has been arrested and accused of firing a gun at a dorm on campus.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, offensive lineman Benjamin Knox was charged with “possessing or discharging a firearm” and “shooting into an occupied dwelling” after USF police said he shot at the outside of the student dormitory where he lives on Sunday morning. Police said several rounds were fired at the wall of the Holly D residence hall. Shell casings were found on the ground, and an open gun case with ammunition were also found inside a vehicle belonging to Knox.
According to USF, Know was immediately suspended from all team activities. Police recovered a handgun that was believed to be used.
“Most schools would have gone on lockdown or at least notified students to stay indoors until they had him in custody”, wrote Kathy Stewart Serocki, whose daughter attends USF.
USF Police unit responded to the area of the Crescent Hill parking garage at about 4 a.m. after reports of gunshot sounds. No one was injured.
On Sunday night, it was unclear what led to the incident.
“There is a fine line as to how we have to put this information out”, Daniel said. “Hopefully, a few motive will come up”.
South Florida has suspended Benjamin Knox following his arrest.
“We teach about behavior, and we teach about reminding all of them, whether you’re a football player or any student-athlete, that you have a responsibility to make sure that you recognize situations that you’re in and you get out of those situations”, Harlan said.
Knox is being held on $15,000 bail at Hillsborough County jail, according to Alfred Ng of the New York Daily News.
