Hamas warns Israel against ‘foolishness’ after deadly strike
On Saturday, Palestinians carried out two stabbing attacks in Jerusalem before being shot dead by police, while another two Palestinian youths were killed near the Gaza border fence, as a weeklong bout of violence showed no signs of slowing.
The two victims, ages 62 and 65, were lightly injured, and police killed the attacker after he allegedly ran toward officers with the knife, authorities said.
Seven Palestinians were killed and 145 wounded, medics said.
Ahmad Jamal (20) was shot dead by IOF during clashes in Shuafat camp, and Isaac Badran (16) was also killed by IOF after he allegedly tried to stab an Israeli soldier in Jerusalem’s Damascus gate.
A rocket fired by Gaza militants late Saturday was intercepted above southern Israel, the army said.
Following the funeral on Saturday of one of those killed, hundreds of young Palestinians approached the border with Israel and began demonstrating there.
The military says five were detained Saturday and taken for questioning while the others retreated.
Border clashes that broke out on Friday came as Hamas’s chief in Gaza, Ismail Haniya, called the overall violence an intifada and urged further unrest. It exploded in an open area in the Eshkol region of southern Israel.
It was the worst day of violence in the Palestinian enclave since last summer’s war with Israel, which killed more than 2,200 and left 100,000 homeless.
Rosenfeld said police in an Arab east Jerusalem neighbourhood also came under attack overnight and responded with gunfire, hitting a 25-year-old. The officer was slightly wounded and his attacker was badly hurt. Today, settlers again filed onto the family home’s roof to watch the Israeli military assault on Palestinians in Bab al-Zawwiya, a few armed with machine guns.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Saturday afternoon’s attack took place just outside the Old City.
Confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli troops are ongoing in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Gaza, as fears grow that the recent spate of violence could spill over into a major uprising.
Clashes rocked West Bank cities Ramallah and Bethlehem on Saturday and there were also more stabbing attacks.
The Palestinian Red Crescent later said that its ambulance crews had treated seven Palestinians shot with live rounds across the Gaza Strip, in addition to 21 who suffered excessive tear gas inhalation. It remains committed to security collaboration with Israel, which its leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has described as “sacred”.

According to the Times, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called up 16 reserve companies of border police. The Israeli army said it was targeting two Hamas weapons-manufacturing sites nearby.
In a daily briefing Friday, State Department spokesman John Kirby said the USA wanted to see the “violence stop, calm returned and real progress made, which we still believe is possible, toward a two-state solution”. The extra forces would augment three companies already called up. Muslims refer to it as the Noble Sanctuary. It is revered by Jews because it was the site of the two Jewish biblical Temples. Under current arrangements, Jews are allowed to visit the site but non-Muslim prayer is banned.
