A United Kingdom manufacturer of prosthetic limbs is supercharging the design of the functional appendages to entice children to embrace physical therapy as a form of “superhero training”.
The prosthetics are geared toward children and include a snowflake hand inspired by Queen Elsa from Frozen, an Iron Man had “hot out of Tony Stark’s workshop” and a Star Wars lightsaber hand designed in collaboration with Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB.
Disney is partnering with Open Bionics to create a range of medically-approved prosthetic devices decorated with imagery from Marvel, Star Wars and Frozen.

The Walt Disney Company is lending its creative teams and providing royalty free licenses to ensure that every product that the British startup creates encapsulates every aspect of the heroes kids love. “It’s pretty fantastic”, a Disney spokesperson told TechCrunch. Fortunately, there do exist people out there who want to make sure those living with disabilities are able to more easily deal with them, and in the case of startup Open Bionics, its goal is to make sure kids can actually make a few fun out of it.
