Flores planning Speaker run if Paul Ryan doesn’t, report shows
A group of hard-line conservative Republicans would “look favorably” on Paul Ryan if he ran to be speaker of the House of Representatives, the group’s leader said on Sunday.
Congressman Ryan left Washington, D.C. on Friday and spent the weekend at home as Republican leaders from across the spectrum continued to call on him to run for Speaker and work to bridge the party’s political divide between the establishment and the Tea Party.
It’s also true that you don’t need a televised debate for what will be an election of 218 Republican House members, but considering the way McCarthy managed to stumble on his first soundbite, a test run in front of the cameras might not be a bad idea.
Since Rep. McCarthy announced his surprise decision to quit, Republicans have been unable to find a credible candidate to replace him.
The Wisconsin Republican, who ran as Vice-President in 2012, is said to be reconsidering the race for House Speaker after initially refusing to commit, McCaul said.
A story about the Speaker’s race at National Review noted that Rep. Daniel Webster, a Florida congressman, is the favored candidate of the Freedom Caucus. Like Flores, Chaffetz has said he would drop out if Ryan gets in.
Speaker of the U.S. House is third in the line of succession from the President of the United States.
The 61-year-old Flores is a long-time energy industry executive. He was elected to Congress in 2010.
Freedom Caucus members want major changes in how the House works, including shifting a few power from their speaker to committee chairmen. Louie Gohmert and Mick Mulvaney.
“People want to marginalize these 30 or 40 as insane right-wing people, but they probably represent the true feeling of the grassroots as much as-or more than-those who have been there for a long time”, Paul said of his colleagues in Washington.
McCarthy pulled out of the speaker’s race when conservative critics said he was too willing to compromise with President Obama. He’ll stay in the job until the House manages to elect a successor, which is the last thing the extremists want.

The House rebels are understandably frustrated after five years in the House majority without as many accomplishments as they’d like. Those commentators are entirely accurate but entirely missing the point. We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments either by the same reader or different readers.
Ryan’s popularity and pleasant persona are not going to be able to smooth over those divisions. They are either approved or deleted.
Hensarling, head of the important House Financial Services Committee, is popular with the 25-member Republican delegation from Texas and has a voting record that could win over unhappy conservatives. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation. House conservatives may think they’re only fulfilling the wishes of the voters, but see how far that gets them if, for whatever reason, the government stops paying its bills and the unemployment rate skyrockets.
