California to automatically register millions of voters
The new law does have its critics.
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a statement that the legislation would “remove a key barrier to voting”. “The right to vote should be no different”, Padilla added. Citizens should not be required to opt in to their fundamental right to vote.
Voters would retain their right to opt out or cancel their voter registration at any time, as well as change their party affiliation.
California officials say that 7 million additional voters will be registered because of the law. But under the new California law, antibiotics won’t be used in either of these ways. These individuals are predominantly young minorities who have much to gain by making one small change, voting.
“That means almost that over half of eligible youth are just being left out entirely of the process”, Rusch said. “But certainly animals and animal agriculture is part of the entire spectrum that we’re concerned about”. Young people move around a lot.
She noted that in the election last November, Los Angeles County, which has 10 million residents, had one drop-off location.
Brown said the state’s budget is still facing financial uncertainties, and the tax credits would make balancing the state’s budget even more hard.
California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday signed a bill that sets the strictest government standards in the United States for the use of antibiotics in livestock production. He uses antibiotics only on pigs that are showing symptoms of illness, and after consulting with a vet. But he says this wasn’t the case 50 years ago, when they kept their pigs outdoors and they were more exposed to weather and pests.
The FDA did not take a position on the legislation, but in February announced it is taking steps to simplify and more clearly communicate how physicians can request to get their patients experimental drugs. The law takes effect January 1, 2018. Oregon adopted a similar measure earlier this year. In California, those applying for driver’s licenses have to show proof of age, which in the vast majority of instances is done with a birth certificate or passport that also demonstrates citizenship. The report links low voter turnout to low registration levels.
Another question is how election administration is paid for in California. But not everyone agrees this law is good.
Engelbrecht said that California’s registration databases “lack the necessary safeguards to keep non-citizens off the voter rolls.” It also puts citizens in a tough position if they want to opt out.
Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill to further strengthen California’s mandatory vaccine laws by requiring that people who work or volunteer at day care centers be vaccinated against certain diseases.
