Court Orders Release of Former President Mubarak’s Sons from Prison
Alaa Mubarak (r.) have been ordered to be let go from jail by Egyptian courts considering time already served on a corruption conviction.
Mubarak and his sons were charged of acquiring nearly 126 million Egyptian pound from the Presidential Palace budget and using them for the construction and development of family-owned assets.
Farid al-Dib, a lawyer for the younger Mubaraks, said that both Alaa and Gamal would likely be released later on Monday.
A court in Egypt has ordered the release of ousted president Hosni Mubarak’s two sons who had been sentenced to three years in jail for corruption, judicial sources say.
The brothers still face trial on insider trading charges, however, with the next hearing due October 17. They were expected to walk free later Monday.
The two were first detained in April 2011 – two months after their father stepped down during a popular uprising against his three decades’ rule, but were freed in January on bail before being convicted in May along with their father, who remains held in a military hospital.
Sisi took power after ousting the country’s first post-revolution leader in 2013 – Islamist president Mohamed Mursi – and won a landslide victory in last year’s presidential election.
In an earlier court case, his two sons were acquitted of charges of killing protesters during the uprising.
Gamal, 51, was a leading member of the former ruling National Democratic Party and was widely seen as his father’s heir apparent.
In May, a court sentenced the trio to three years in prison each for having embezzled 125-million Egyptian pounds ($16m) from funds that were meant for the maintenance of presidential palaces.
