Max Scherzer Throws His Second No-Hitter of the Season!
Right fielder Curtis Granderson’s solo homer with one out in the eighth inning snapped a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon, when seven New York Mets pitchers combined on a two-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. “I was able to execute all four of my pitches whether I was behind in the count or ahead in the count”.
Scherzer, who tossed a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 20, is just the fifth pitcher in history to throw two no-hitters in the same season.
Only one batter reached base against Scherzer, and that came when third baseman Yunel Escobar bounced a throw for an error on Kevin Plawecki’s leadoff grounder in the sixth inning.
“No, not right now”, Scherzer said with a laugh. Scherzer struck out 17 New York batters and walked none. The 27-year-old Floridian, who has lost two straight turns at home, does not figure to go deep into Sunday’s contest as he will get the call in Game 1 of the NLDS versus Los Angeles.
“Speechless”, said Scherzer, presented with those facts, already the team’s single-season strikeout king, now the first man in four decades to be so dominant.
“At this particular moment, there’s a lot of things to be discussed”, Desmond said. The Amazin’s were perceived as a possible contender entering the season, but key trade acquisitions helped push them over the top.
Johnny Vander Meer, who pitched two in a row, Nolan Ryan, Virgil Trucks and Allie Reynolds also threw a pair in the same season. “Glad we got there!” “And that’s what I’m proud about”. For Sunday’s game the Mets start Jacob deGrom who has allowed 149 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 198 over 187 innings for a 14-8 record and a 2.60 ERA. Chris Heston of the Giants worked his magic against them on June 9.
The victor of the Mets vs. Dodgers series will advance to play in the National League Championship Series.
The Nationals won the opener when Harper connected off Addison Reed (3-3). Thank goodness for the so-called “Buster Posey Rule”.
Craig Breslow (0-4) gave up both home runs, his only mistakes in 5 1-3 innings. He was hit by a fastball from hard-throwing Noah Syndergaard in the opener before connecting for a home run his next time up. With the match-up starting out on the West Coast, viewers should get prepared for a few late start times in games 1 and 2. “I think most of the guys’ mindsets are on that”.
Now Wright wants to believe this team is built for October because of it.
“We thought we had one of the best teams in all of baseball”, Harper said. “We’ll use that as fuel”.
Harvey (13-8, 2.71 ERA) will start only once in the series because he and the Mets are concerned about his workload in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. If he is unable to take the mound, then the plan is to have deGrom pitch Game 4 and then have Syndergaard go in Game 5.
“Normally when I throw my bullpen I feel pretty good, and that’s on three-days”, deGrom said. “When it lands, you’re thinking triple”. Instead, he had to settle for his second no-hitter of the season.
“You don’t see it very often, let alone twice”, Williams continued. “I’m having too much fun”. He became the first Marlins player since Hanley Ramirez in 2007 to get 200 hits.
Granderson cleared the center-field fence in the eighth against Blake Treinen to finish the season with 26 homers and 70 RBIs.
Tanner Roark held the Mets to three hits over six shutout innings with one walk. He walked two and struck out four.
“You just have a feeling what you know the out-pitch is. They were my three biggest mistakes”, Rusin said.
