Birthday Girl Garbine Muguruza Reaches Beijing Quarters, Qualifies for WTA Finals
Garbine Murguruza wins the China Open after defeating Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets in the final. “This has been an energizing year for me”.
The Spaniard has now won 19 consecutive matches after winning the first set.
And while it has taken Muguruza most of 2015 to claim her first title-though it could not be a bigger one outside the Majors-she broke into the top 20 in February and the top 10 with her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
“Amazing. I’m extremely happy to earn the victory today”, Muguruza told the crowd in Beijing.
The Spanish tennis player was down 2-5 in the first set to Bacsinszky, the world No. 17, but she rallied and mounted an epic comeback.
Muguruza’s next chance to showcase her prodigious gifts will come on one of the biggest stages of them all: the WTA Finals.

“Muguruza suffered a left ankle injury while playing in the Wuhan Open at the beginning of October”, tournament organisers announced on Monday. She will look to attack the return of second serve and her opponent’s forehand, so Bacsinszky must try to avoid getting pinned too far behind the baseline where she’s forced to slice on her weaker wing. This year, he also only lost 14 games coming into the final, the fewest in his career at an ATP Tour event with a minimum of four matches played, according to the ATP.
The second set was a much tighter affair but Muguruza grabbed the crucial break for 5-4 and she went to match point when Bacsinszky went just long with a hopeful lob.
The win also qualified the Wimbledon finalist into the WTA Finals in Singapore. “It’s unbelievable, and I can’t wait to come back and defend my title next year”.
