Guillermo Del Toro eyes new project
Speaking with The Guardian (via The Playlist) while promoting Crimson Peak, del Toro let a few details slip on his new project, including that the film’s title is Silva, which is a pretty common Spanish last name. I hope I can go back to doing the smaller, weirder ones.
British newspaper The Guardian had a recent interview with del Toro, and the writer-director revealed a few information on the small movie he plans to make.
Titled Silva, the passion project centers on a masked Mexican wrestler who discovers that all politicians are blood-sucking vampires. He said the film was put on a serious back-burner during his early days of making movies after his family fled their home country for Toronto after his father was kidnapped and the family paid a hefty ransom.
Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro says he is putting a fresh spin on the gothic romance genre in “Crimson Peak” by subverting the classic gender roles in the period thriller.
What I can tell you quite safely is, I don’t intend to keep on doing big, giant Hollywood movies for much longer.
Del Toro has been involved with numerous projects and has either dropped out or the project has fallen through. “I thought, wouldn’t it be great to make one of these movies where it doesn’t end up with Fabio carrying the girl outside of the house to a cliff?” shared the director.
The movie tells the story of aspiring New York-based author Edith Cushing, played by Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, who falls for mysterious British stranger Thomas Sharpe, portrayed by “Thor” actor Tom Hiddleston. But that hasn’t stopped the del Toro from talking about the sequel, even while he is on the current Crimson Peak press tour. “I mean, it’s big for a drama, but it’s a much smaller undertaking than “Pacific Rim” or ‘Hellboy, ‘” he said, noting he’s been approached to direct “gigantic” superhero franchises.
We don’t typically associate del Toro with “political” films, but his movies are always deeply personal, and it sounds like Silva will be no different in that regard.
Whatever he does next, whether it’s The Haunted Mansion or Silva or Pacific Rim 2, we’re excited to experience it.
