Central Texas congressman announces run for House speaker
While touting his credentials, Chaffetz says he would withdraw his bid if a colleague favored by Republican Party elders, Congressman and 2012 vice presidential contender Paul Ryan, entered the fray.
As of today, eight Republicans are in the mix, with more thinking about it.
Sen. Rand Paul praised House Republicans’ most conservative members for effectively ending one Speaker’s tenure and sending the party into disarray as it looks for another.
“We have emasculated ourselves because we have pretty much conceded that we don’t have the power of the purse”, said Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho), a founding member of the Freedom Caucus, which continues to support Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) for speaker. But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. “He’s going to have the same problems that John Boehner had and Kevin McCarthy was about to experience”.
Now, the earliest elections will be held is next week as the House is in recess. Ryan may not want to run, although he could probably get the votes and is well liked and well respected, because he doesn’t want to fight with his own caucus before trying to run for President in the future.
Rep. McCaul, R-Austin, is the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. “I think he would have had a tough time regardless”, Hannity said, because of his close ties to Boehner, who lost the confidence of the conservative wing of the party. He’s a great spokesperson’. If it’s more important than the causes of his own party, then what is he ambitious about?
Consider, for instance, the famed friendship between President Ronald Reagan and former Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill of Massachusetts. Webster said in a Web video pitching his candidacy.
Lynn Westmoreland, another more conservative member of the GOP, said that he was pursuing the job shortly after McCarthy dropped out. Previous year he said at an event hosted by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that “it’s not a question of “if” we fix our broken immigration laws”.
Let’s go back to 2010 and see what conservative politicians were saying. “Do you want to be chairman of Ways and Means?” King said, “Well, it was something that I’ve been in favor of for a long time”.
The first official votes in the 2016 presidential race won’t be cast until February, but there is a consensus among leading Republicans that October is a huge month for Jeb Bush. They have a couple of people in there. Rep. Tom Cole (R., Okla.) has repeatedly criticized tactics based on shutdowns and brinkmanship with no chance of success.
The National Review labeled Roskam and Blackburn the “dark horse” candidates and outlined their appeal.
And it’s a path from which it might be hard for Ryan to deviate to accept the thankless job of House Speaker.
Everything’s bigger in Texas and so was the supply of names rumored to be eyeing the speaker’s gavel.
Flores also told a room of oil and gas executives that he would run for the speakership on Monday, reported the Texas Tribune.
But as Trump tries to turn strong poll numbers into strong performance, CNN’s MJ Lee reports that his campaign is taking new steps to make sure it gets the nitty gritty of organizing.
In addition, nearly all come from comfortably Republican congressional districts, so their main hurdle to retaining their seats is potential challenges in the GOP primary election.
