Qualcomm Agrees To Sell Augmented Reality Software Platform
“You may have heard the news that Qualcomm has signed an agreement to sell the Vuforia business to PTC, a global provider of technology platforms and solutions”.
“We share PTC’s vision for a connected world and look forward to seeing the Vuforia mobile platform continuing to flourish under PTC’s leadership”, said Derek Aberle, president of QUALCOMM.
Qualcomm launched Vuforia five years ago as a way to highlight the capabilities of its chipsets and software and bring augmented reality into mainstream mobile computing. In 2011 it came to iOS, and it has since been used to create mobile AR games like Level-5’s Yo-Kai Land. Qualcomm VP Jay Wright, who has been running the business, will move over to PTC and continue to lead the Vuforia effort. Qualcomm continues to push laptop eye-sight technological innovation that will actually free numerous uses for people and businesses or companies all over the world..
For instance, PTC said the platform will be geared toward finding “new ways to design products, to monitor and control products, and to instruct operators and technicians in the appropriate methods of use and service”.
Vuforia has wide adoption from leading companies including 37 of the Interbrand 100.
As of 2015, Vuforia – which supports multiple developer tools, including Eclipse, xCode, and Unity – powers more than 20,000 apps and has more than 200 million app installations worldwide.
“We are pleased with the prospect of adding the market-leading AR technology platform, together with its large developer community, to our technology portfolio”. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
