Younis surpasses Miandad as Pakistan’s highest test scorer
Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram has hit again at critics of Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and veteran Younis Khan, saying the duo have earned full rights to determine when they need to retire.
Younis has so far scored 8,333 runs in 102 Tests, with a Pakistan record of 30 centuries.
The 37-year-old said that although it would be great to achieve the record, but he would never be able to achieve the heights which Miandad had got, Sport24 reported. “I want to be recognised as a batsman who always played for his country”, said Younis.
Miandad scored 8832 runs in a glittering Test career that lasted from 1976 to 1993. “I never thought I would do it at the start of my career”, said Younis, 34, on Monday (October 12).
Younis also became the fifth Pakistan batsman and 62nd overall to play 100 Tests during the second match of the Test series against Sri Lanka in June. He has enjoyed a resurgence as a Test player after being dropped, scoring 468 runs in a 2-0 series win over Australia – Pakistan’s first in two decades – and then scoring a brilliant 171 not out in Pakistan’s last Test in July to help secure their highest target of 377.
“I am feeling very normal, there is no pressure on me”, added Younis.
It is interesting that both these batsmen had scored a ton on their debut Test. Younis is also Pakistan’s leading century-maker with 30.
Younis said he could have crossed Miandad in Sri Lanka itself, but fell just short. Khan said that cricket is a team’s game first and Pakistan needed that win against Sri Lanka.
